To all artists who work alone – please look up!
Look beyond your walls to what’s happening in your industry. To be successful in business and well rounded as a person, you must stay informed about your area of expertise and the world in general. I suggest you read a major newspaper (I read the NY Times every day) and subscribe to a few trade publications (I receive WWD and MJSA Journal). I know it’s time consuming but also understand that not only is it good for your business but you need to set aside a bit of time for yourself, as well.
Sit out under a tree, at the boardwalk or in a coffee shop, read and relax for a half-an-hour. It’s important to know what’s going on outside of your studio and how your production and sales can be affected, plus you sound intelligent at parties. *wink
